Elders have the responsibility to oversee the whole work of the local church, with a focus on the ministry of the Word, prayer and worship (Acts 6:2, 4; 2:24; 4:31; 1 Tim. 4:13-16; 2 Tim. 4:2).

Deacons have been given as assistants to the Elders to administer the work of the church (Acts 6:1-6; Num. 11:1-4; 10-17). The congregation is to follow with esteem and love the teaching and example of those who lead them (Heb. 13:7; 17; 1 Thes. 5:12-13).
